Saif's Journey: From Misunderstanding to Hope
A Family's Struggle with Autism
Saif Qasim, a bright-eyed 6-year-old, has never set foot in a school. His parents, initially unaware of autism, misinterpreted his behaviors as signs of an intellectual disability. And because he lived in an environment devoid of awareness and understanding of special needs, his unique requirements were overlooked, leading to significant delays in his development. His speech was limited, and his parents felt a profound sense of worry and helplessness, not knowing how to help their son navigate a world that seemed increasingly difficult for him.
A Glimmer of Hope
The turning point came when a concerned doctor referred Saif’s parents to a psychiatrist, who diagnosed him with autism. For the first time, they had a name for what Saif was experiencing. However, this revelation brought with it a whirlwind of questions and uncertainties- "What did this mean for Saif's future? Would he ever be able to attend school, make friends, or lead a normal life?" Desperate for guidance, they reached out to Reach Inclusion, hoping for a miracle.
Assessment and Discovery
Reach Inclusion began by conducting a thorough assessment of Saif. Despite being pre-verbal, it quickly became evident that he had high-functioning autism. Saif demonstrated remarkable abilities, such as rapidly learning numbers and comprehending instructions in English, even though his family spoke only Arabic at home. His potential was undeniable, and the team at Reach Inclusion was determined to help him flourish.
Inclusion and Progress
Saif was enrolled in the Reach Inclusion Summer Program 2024. Here, he not only honed his academic skills but also made significant strides in practical areas such as eating independently and using the bathroom with verbal prompts. The program provided him with a supportive environment where he could thrive, surrounded by understanding and patient educators.
Financial Hurdle
Despite his progress, Saif’s journey is far from over. The path to securing a place in a school that can cater to his unique needs is fraught with financial challenges. The cost of specialized education in a school is prohibitively high. Reach Inclusion has been tirelessly searching for financial support for over a year, striving to give Saif the chance to continue his education with an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
The Call to Action
Saif’s story highlights a larger issue that affects countless families. Children with autism possess incredible potential, but without societal awareness and financial support, they are often denied the opportunity to succeed. It is crucial to advocate for the needs of these children and their families, ensuring they receive the education and support they deserve.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Reach Inclusion is committed to making a difference, but we cannot do it alone. We need the support of compassionate individuals and organizations to help children like Saif access the education and resources they need to thrive. By raising awareness and advocating for these children, we can create a more inclusive society where every child has the opportunity to succeed.
Yousef: My Superhero Story
Hey everyone, it's me, Yousef! I'm eight years old and doing super awesome in Grade 2 at this super cool school where amazing things happen every day!
Let me tell you, it wasn't always this way. Back when I was just a little kid struggling with writing and understanding things, people thought I was like a puzzle that couldn't be solved. But guess what? Now I have the BEST handwriting in my class! Can you believe it?
I used to need lots of help with writing, reading, and coloring, but guess what? Now I can do it all by myself! It's like magic! And it's not just about school stuff. I've become so good at following instructions, and I don't need detailed transitions anymore. I can go through my day like a superhero!
Speaking of superheroes, did you know that even famous people had challenges when they were kids? Like Albert Einstein, he was really bad at school when he was my age, and look how amazing he became! And Thomas Edison , he had a tough time too, but he created the light bulb! and so literally lighted up our lives today. I feel like a little superhero myself, overcoming challenges and turning them into victories.
Let me tell you about how it all started. When I was 5, I went to a daycare, but things didn't go well. They thought I was being disruptive, and I got asked to leave. Then, there was this special Centre in Jeddah that tried to help me, but it wasn't enough. They couldn't understand me, and I had to leave too. It felt really sad. Despite having every door closed for me, my parents fell 7 times and stood up the 8.
But then, my family found Reach Inclusion and they came into my life. They helped me a lot, especially with talking and expressing myself. They made a plan just for me! I got better and went to a big school for KG3, but there were some problems because the school didn't really know about kids with Autism like me and they didn’t understand my superhero team either. Reach Inclusion kept helping me and stood by my side, even when the school didn't understand. They stood strong, determined to show the world that kids like me can shine bright.
With their help, I learned to talk in English and Arabic! Now I can chit-chat with everyone, and I'm even bilingual! I used to avoid talking, but now I'm a chatterbox. It's like I found a superpower! And you know what's the coolest part? I'm not alone. There are lots of kids like me who just need a chance.
I moved to a new school for Grade 1, and things got even better. My writing got better, and I could do things like pouring, mixing, I could even perform on stage and use the toilet all by myself. It felt like becoming a grown-up!
Now in Grade 2, I'm doing even better. My family is proud of me, and so is everyone in my school. We're breaking down walls and showing the world that kids like me are superheroes in the making. Thanks to Reach Inclusion, I'm not just a success story; I'm a friend, a student, and a kid who can do anything!
So, let's spread the word and let every kid shine. We're not burdens; we're gifts waiting to be unwrapped. And organizations like Reach Inclusion are the real superheroes, making sure every child is seen, heard, and included. Together, we're building a world that understands and accepts us just the way we are! Big shoutout to Reach Inclusion for making me feel like a rockstar in my own story! #InclusionMatters #YousefRocks
